SUMMARY:Freedom Seder for the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Maundy Thursday Seder gathering. We will be using the Haggadah (seder narrative) from the Interfaith Freedom Seder held on the third night of Passover\, April 4\, 1969\, the first anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King\, in the basement of a Black church in Washington DC. About 800 people took part\, half of them Jews\, the rest Black and white Christians. This Seder gathering soon became the model and stimulus for many Seders affirming the liberation of its celebrants —with feminist\, environmentalist\, antiwar\, vegetarian\, and pro-labor themes\, among others. \n\nThis is a family-friendly event and there are opportunities for children to be involved in the telling of the people of Israel being freed from slavery in Egypt. Traditionally four glasses of wine (or juice) and a number of food items are used as part of the telling of the story. It is an opportunity to consider what are the plagues and Pharaohs of our day\, and how we might be invited to participate in God’s work of healing and liberation. \nPlease RSVP so we can prepare enough places for everyone! We may ask you to bring one bottle of wine or grape juice\, your own table settings and wine glasses. \nRSVP via the Facebook event here.

SUMMARY:Book discussion this Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, October 9\, we’ll gather for a meal and a conversation on sexuality. \nWe’ll take some talking points from Chapter 17 of the book: A New Kind of Christianity\, by Brian McLaren. Reading the book ahead of time or even having the book is not necessary for attendance – simply join in the conversation\, and we’ll have a printout with some of the important quotes and points! \nBrian McLaren says\, “Being a human at this time in history makes it all the more difficult to navigate our sexual lives.” He notes that sex and community are less connected than ever before\, and he shares why gay men and women have something to teach us about being honest about our sexuality: “… the longer we hide from the truth of our sexuality—in all of its beauty and agony\, in all of its passion and pain\, in all of its simplicity and complexity—the less healthy we will be…” \nIf you want to pick up a copy of the book\, you can do that here: http://amzn.to/2bvH7lE. \nGathering is at 5pm\, meeting at 5944 146th Ave! We’ll start with a meal as usual\, so feel free to bring something to share!
